When Josephine (Brazil) Linden ‘69 spoke in the Sydney Town Hall at Kambala’s Speech Day 2015, she noted that the school song includes the line “our paths may scatter o’er the world’s wide spaces”. In an impressive and international career, Josephine has pushed geographical, intellectual and professional boundaries to rise through the ranks a Goldman Sachs, become a mother and a grandmother, and to set up her own wealth management firm. Linden Global Strategies, located on 5th Avenue in New York City, manages portfolios and provides advisory services to a US clientele. For the past year Josephine has been offering a Fellowship for Kambala Old Girls who are curious about the world of finance and the life of a New York professional. The most recent Linden Fellow was Annie Handmer ’11. Annie has just completed a BA (Hons) in Philosophy and will start work this year in corporate finance at a global investment bank. She applied because she wanted to gain a deeper understanding of investing from a markets perspective, and gain confidence in a formal corporate setting. Annie says that the experience exceeded all her expectations. “Not only did I learn a vast amount about stocks, hedge funds, and the markets in general, I also found that from day one I was sitting at the table with the clients and the fund managers, alongside Josephine and her phenomenal team.” “One of the best things about the experience was how flexible it was. This meant that I learned a wide range of new things, and then had the time and the freedom to go deeper and understand concepts from multiple angles and on different levels. It was also a historically significant time to be in the States.” In the latter months of 2016 the eyes of the world were on New York and Washington DC as the election cycle reached a conclusion. “I hadn’t realised before I got there, but Josephine’s office was actually right opposite Trump Tower, and the meeting room looked out on the hotel that Hillary Clinton was staying at. I will never forget sitting with Josephine and discussing the latest political events over a cup of tea and a packet of musk sticks, or the morning we watched Hillary, Bill, and Chelsea walk to the motorcade and go to deliver her concession speech, or walking down 6th Avenue to see a Broadway show one night and finding myself in the middle of an anti-Trump demonstration.” “The school prayer includes the line ‘teach us…to give and not to count the cost’. Whether we are religious or not, the spirit of generosity within our diverse community is one of the most wonderful things about being a Kambala girl. Having seen how hard Josephine and her team work I was astounded by her willingness to devote so much of her time, energy, and attention to my professional development, and that of the previous and future recipients of the fellowship”. The next recipient of the Linden Fellowship, Luisa Gidaro ’08 commences with Linden Global Strategies in January 2017. Applications for the Semester 2 2017 Linden Fellowship are now open. Applications close: Tuesday 31 January, 2017. http://www.kambala.nsw.edu.au/contact-us/employment
